RFID and Asset Tracking

Barcode and RFID systems that track inventory, assets and equipment through your building, built around the process you already have rather than the one a product assumes.

Counts you can act on

Inventory accuracy stops being a quarterly argument and becomes something you can check on a Tuesday. The value is not the scan, it is trusting the number enough to make a decision from it.

Coverage that holds through the racking

Most scanning problems are wireless problems. A warehouse full of steel and stock is a genuinely hostile radio environment, and consumer grade access points placed by guesswork will drop a scanner halfway down an aisle.

Engineered to your process

We design the read points, workflows and integrations around how your operation actually runs. Where nothing off the shelf fits, we build the piece that does rather than asking your staff to work around the software.

The scan is the easy part

Buying scanners is straightforward. What makes a tracking project succeed or fail is everything around them: whether the wireless holds up with the building full, whether the labels survive the environment, whether the data lands somewhere your existing software can use, and whether the workflow matches what your staff already do.

We have seen more tracking projects undone by access point placement than by anything to do with the scanners.

Where this work usually starts

  • Inventory nobody trusts. The system says one number, the shelf says another, and the gap has become normal. Everything downstream, from purchasing to promising a customer a date, is built on a number people quietly work around.
  • Scanners that drop. The hardware gets blamed, replaced, and drops again, because the problem was never the hardware.
  • Assets that walk. Tools, test gear and returnable containers with real value and no system behind them.
  • A process no product covers. The off the shelf options each get you most of the way, and the remainder is a person doing something by hand every shift.

Warehouses are a radio problem first

A distribution building is close to a worst case environment for wireless. Steel racking reflects, dense stock absorbs, and both change as the building fills and empties. Coverage that surveyed clean on an empty floor will fail in a loaded aisle, and roaming that was never tuned will hand a scanner between access points badly enough to break a session mid pick.

We survey loaded, design for the aisles rather than the open floor, and tune roaming for devices that move constantly. That work is usually what makes the difference between a system people use and a system people route around.

Hardware

Zebra is our default for printers, scanners and mobile computers, and we are a Zebra partner. That is a preference based on serviceability and how well the devices hold up in a working building, not an exclusive arrangement. Where another manufacturer is the better fit for your environment, or where you already have a fleet worth keeping, we will say so and work with what you have.

Built for your operation, not a generic one

Every warehouse we walk into runs differently. The sequence, the exceptions, the things that only happen on a Friday, the one customer with their own labelling requirement. Software that ignores those is software your staff will work around within a month.

We design around how your operation actually runs, configure existing products where they fit, and engineer the specific pieces where they do not.

FAQ

RFID and Asset Tracking questions

Still stuck? Send us the question and a real engineer will answer it.

Do we need RFID, or is barcode enough?

Barcode is enough for most operations, and it is dramatically cheaper. RFID earns its cost in a specific case: you need to read many items at once without line of sight, or the labour cost of scanning each item individually is the actual problem. If someone is already handling every item anyway, adding RFID often buys you very little. We will tell you when barcode is the right answer even though the RFID project is the larger quote.

Will this work with the inventory software we already have?

Usually, and that is the first thing we check rather than the last. Most ERP and WMS platforms have a supported integration path, and where they do not there is normally an API or an import route we can build against. If your software genuinely cannot accept the data, we will tell you that before you buy hardware, not after.

Our scanners keep dropping in the racking. Is that the scanners?

Almost never. It is nearly always coverage, roaming configuration or access point placement designed for an empty building rather than a full one. Stock and steel racking absorb and reflect signal, and a warehouse that surveyed clean when it was empty will fail once it is loaded. This is diagnosable, and it is a survey rather than a guess.

What does a tracking system cost?

Barcode systems built on standard hardware and an existing software platform are the most predictable, and a single site is typically a few thousand dollars in hardware plus the integration work. RFID runs meaningfully higher because the tags, readers and antennas are per read point and per item. Both are quoted after a site walk, because the building drives the number more than the item count does.

Can you track equipment and tools rather than inventory?

Yes, and it is often the easier win. Tools, test equipment, IT assets, returnable containers and field equipment are high value, easy to lose and rarely tracked by the inventory system. The item count is smaller, the integration is simpler, and the payback is usually obvious within a year.

What if our process does not fit any product?

Then we build for it. That is a large part of this work, and it is the same team that writes the custom software elsewhere in the business. We would rather configure something that already exists when it fits, but when the workaround has become a spreadsheet somebody maintains by hand every shift, that spreadsheet is the specification for what should be built.
